HOW DOES YOUR OUR GARDEN GROW?

Today was a great day! Paco finished building my raised vegetable garden bed...here he is putting on the finishing touches...We recycled some wood we had left over from the new deck he built a couple years ago. We will probably get a few years out of it and then will replace it with a retaining wall of landscaping bricks at that time. Its just over 12 feet long by 4 feet wide, and 17 inches high. We built it tall because I want to grow carrots and potatoes and they need at least 12 inches for their roots, not to mention its easier on the back! We stapled landscaping fabric on the bottom to prevent weeds. We chose not to treat the wood because I'm keeping it an all organic garden and don't want the chemicals seeping through the soil to our veggies! I'll be using organic fertilizer as well. Here's a look at the finished frame...I originally wanted the garden in our backyard, but the space I had picked out for it just doesn't get enough sunshine, so we put it on the end of our house. It gets full sun for about 9 hours. Paco is still in shock that I gave in and did it his way. It's so unlike me. Ha! Soooo, after unloading two truckfulls of this... and a little help from these two...
We finally got the darn thing filled up! Next was the fun part....PLANTING!!

Of course, we put the "homegrown" touch on things....the kids worked the dirt with their feet..hey, it works for grapes doesn't it?
So if you come over for dinner and the veggies taste a little funny, you will know why! Here's Gracie with her watermelon plant...and Cole was in charge of spreading steer manure....with much animation I might add...Gracie working her magic...she already has a love for gardening!! and, finally, the finished product!!I know, I know....its not that impressive yet, but it will be! We planted a few starters and then quite a few seeds, although if I had known we were going to get this built I would have started the seeds inside a couple months ago. No big deal though...it will be fun for the kids to watch the entire process! I still have to stake the tomatoes and I want to find some cute marker stakes for all the other veggies. Here's what we planted...
  • lots of tomatoes (early girl, cherry, and yellow)
  • radishes
  • carrots
  • yellow squash
  • bush beans
  • icebox watermelon (the small ones)
  • red and yellow peppers
  • cucumbers
  • raspberries
  • chives
  • cilantro
  • oregano and basil (these will be in pots at the end of the garden)

I will also be doing a little bit of composting, gathering up kitchen scraps, blending them up and spreading them in the garden. I did this last year with my flowers and they loved it!

We are lucky enough that our neighbor's sprinklers happen to hit this particular area of our yard, so we will be recycling his water into our garden! This will be perfect for when we are on vacation over the summer.

We also finally got our topsy turvys planted. Usually I do all my planting over Mother's Day weekend, but being sick has really set me back on everything. I got all my pots done this weekend too. Here's what they look like (yes, I know this is just SO important to you, isn't it?)
We planted two of these. It will be interesting to see if they live up to all the hype! Here's one of the pots on the back deck...I planted four total...

I used lobelia, marigolds, zinnias and white alyssum. These are identical to what I did last year and they nearly tripled in size...the alyssum grew over the pot and was touching the deck, they were gorgeous! I also have a pink hydrangea that Paco sent me for my anniversary, I have to do some research and see if I can find a place to plant it. Also, my rhododendron is in full bloom and the peonies are about to open up! Gracie and I would like to try strawberries, but I don't know if its too late? Anyone know? Thanks to my Mom for teaching me what she knew about gardening! I'm certainly not an expert, but learning as I go.

Wow, this wound up being a long post with alot of pictures of, well...alot. Hope you enjoyed the tour....now its time for me to nurse my sunburn and aching muscles!

A LITTLE OF THIS, A LITTLE OF THAT

So, what have we been upto this week? Let's see....Paco was diagnosed with viral bronchitis and has been taking codeine cough syrup and using an inhaler. He is finally starting to feel better! I'm STILL sick, but not as bad as I was. I'm guessing I also had/have bronchitis, which could explain why the antibiotics didn't help. Gracie has a cough and sore throat, and poor Cole is just trying to stay the heck away from us! HA!

We were supposed to leave for the cabin today, but neither Paco or I have felt up to all the work that would be required, so sadly we are staying home. BOO! We are sick of being sick. I mean, really, enough is enough for the Sutton family!

This afternoon Paco and I planted our tomatoes in our "Topsy Turvys". I'll let you know how that goes. I am skeptical but hopeful. We also planted our red and yellow peppers. I love gardening!

While we were planting, the kids were doing this...

and this...
and that was so much fun that Cole did this... and then they really got goofy....Afterwards, Paco bbq'd pork ribs and we had a fantastic family dinner, which doesn't get to happen much around here! (I mean having a family dinner, not a fantastic dinner!) Then, I made a little something special for dessert....Then it was time for some games....
And now, the kids are both enjoying staying up extra late, and are "waiting" for me on the couch so they can come snuggle up in bed with me....

Looks like they didn't quite make it!

DAYS OF SUMMER ALMOST SUMMER

PLAYDATES

Last week, we took Cole and Grace, and two of their friends, out for an afternoon of bowling and playing at the park. Here's the little Suttons brushing up on their bowling skills...

Gracie and Carolynn giving me their best smiles...
Cole and Joseph...don't they just look like trouble?
and, for good measure, a shot of my gorgeous bowling shoes...
In case you were wondering (you know you were), I was not the least bit embarassed when the people next to me watched me taking pictures of my shoe. I have no shame!

After bowling and pizza, it was off to the park...
You may be wondering why there aren't any pictures of the boys playing at the park. That's because they wouldn't stay in one place long enough for me to get one! Everyone had fun and were good and tired by the time we got home. If only every day could be a day at the park!

ANOTHER BIRTHDAY PICTURE

I forgot about this one...way back at the beginning of the school year, on parents night at Kindergarten, all the parents decorated a birthday crown for our child. Here is Gracie wearing her hat!

Did you ever know how masterful I was at writing with glue and glitter? Gracie got to wear her birthday crown, pick out snacks for the day, and sit in the special rocking chair. Isn't she so special? Gosh....to be back in Kindergarten!

CRAPPY CUPCAKE MAKER

Against my better judgement, I let Gracie buy a cupcake maker at Toys R Us yesterday. She had gift cards and I promised her she could get whatever she wanted. So, we spent $30 on this cupcake maker and attempted to use it this morning. That thing is garbage! First of all, its a ton of work for one stinkin' cupcake.

Secondly, the cupcakes smell disgusting. I couldn't even bring myself to try it. Of course, what do you expect from something that cooks in the microwave for 30 seconds...SHE didn't even eat the cupcake, for crying out loud!

Lastly, the giant contraption you see here does nothing more than "supposedly" frost your cupcake with beautiful swirls of frosting. In reality, it dumps a glob of it in the same place every time it rotates.

Long story short (or not so short), after talking with Gracie we took the stupid thing back. I think I'll buy her a pastry decorating kit, that comes with all the different styles of tips, and she can make real cupcakes that won't make our stomachs turn. She picked out Twister and a wii cheerleading game. Everyone is happy!!

GUESS WHO'S HAVING A BIRTHDAY?

Our little ladybug turns 6 today!

Just like we do for both of the kids birthdays, the morning started out with cupcakes for breakfast!

Followed by a more nutritious (well kinda) breakfast...

Then she opened a few presents, and off we went to Toys R Us where she had a whole bunch of money to spend! She picked out a cupcake maker, Littlest pet shop DS game, UNO card game, and some candy. Later, we had some BBQ, cupcakes and ice cream, and a silly string fight in the backyard. We kept things pretty low key because I've been so sick lately and haven't been able to put together her birthday parties yet. She got the Barbie pool she's been wanting...

a very trendy purse filled with earrings, make up and money...

and a dance outfit for the new ballet classes she is starting!

She also got lots of clothes, new dresses and cute little girl earrings.

There aren't words to describe how much I love my little girl, isn't she adorable?
Happy Birthday, Grace Elizabeth. Mommy loves you all the way to the moon and back!
